The poorest old lady in the neighborhood found 300,000 pesos, but when she returned it, the owner said she was ‘short’ another 100,000 pesos. She was surprised and had to borrow money from the bank to pay more… but just three days later, everything turned around.

Lola Teresa , who lives at the end of Barangay San Rafael , is a person loved by everyone in the neighborhood. Her husband died early, her children are far away and she has no contact with them. She lives alone in a dilapidated bahay kubo, surviving on a few rented fields and collecting scrap metal along the canal.

One morning, while picking up beer cans and plastic bottles, she saw a leather bag lying on the side of the road. She opened it and inside was a thick wad of money, roughly counting it to about 300,000 pesos . She had never held such a large amount of money in her life, her hands were shaking, her heart was pounding. But thinking of the saying “Hindi sa ‘yo, ibalik mo” (what belongs to someone must be returned), she carefully wrapped it up and hurriedly brought it to Mang Hugo’s house — the richest lumberyard owner in the area.

Seeing the money, Mang Hugo counted it and frowned:

“Bakit 300,000 lang? I have more than 400,000 pesos in my pocket . Pay the rest of the amount you kept!”

Lola Teresa was stunned and stammered an explanation, but Mang Hugo insisted that she had not said enough. Not wanting to be branded a thief, she gritted her teeth and borrowed more than 100,000 pesos from the bank to pay him back. The whole neighborhood whispered, those who loved her cried for her, and those who were suspicious looked at her with different eyes.

Three days later
, early in the morning, the sound of engines rumbled in front of Lola Teresa’s house. When everyone ran out, they were all shocked: in front of the yard were 10 luxury SUVs and sedans , each with its door open, filled with gifts, electronics, and even envelopes of cash.

From the middle car stepped out a man dressed in white barong Tagalog, with a successful appearance and red eyes. He approached and knelt before the old woman:

“Nanay… I have been looking for you for 20 years . I am the boy that you found and raised. Now I have come back to repay you!”

Before the old woman could recover, a familiar figure stepped out from behind the man — it was Mang Hugo . His face paled when he saw his “son” turn around, revealing a meaningful smile:

“Mang Hugo… I heard that you are ‘short’ 100,000 pesos and an old and weak person had to borrow from the bank to pay it back. From today on, your woodworking shop will be under my ownership. As for the money she borrowed, I will pay her back tenfold… so that she can live comfortably for the rest of her life.”

The whole neighborhood was silent. Mang Hugo bowed his head, sweat pouring down his forehead. As for Lola Teresa, tears streaming down her face, she tightly held the hand of the son she thought she had lost long ago.

In the early morning sunlight, in front of the old bahay kubo, people saw an old woman — who had suffered all her life — finally holding her head high .
