My mother-in-law sold all her possessions (land, house) to pay off her elder brother’s gambling debts. A month later, he sadly had to rent a house from a small pension. I quietly went home and put something in his bedroom, and then an unexpected truth came out…
My mother-in-law Sharma used to be the most influential woman in the family. An entire 300-square-metre plot on the outskirts of Jaipur, plus a sprawling three-storey house with a red book in his name – everything he said, the whole family would listen to. But everything started falling apart when the eldest son, Rajesh, joined the gamble.
At first, he borrowed just a few thousand rupees, then a few lakhs. The more Rajesh lost, the more he threw himself into the fire. My mother-in-law mortgaged land records, sold all her wedding gold and jewellery… Eventually, they sold both the land and the house to “save their son one last time,” saying:
“He is my blood, the eldest Son.” How can I just stand there and watch him die?”
After selling the house, she went to rent an old room in a small lane in Chandpole area. The room was just too big for a wooden bed and a rusty iron cupboard. His pension was more than Rs. 10,000, and the rent was almost half that. Every time I approached her, she would give a fake smile:
“I am used to living with simplicity, there is no problem, son…”
I was the youngest daughter-in-law, living with my mother-in-law for many years, but her grace was never there. She always gave Rajesh and his wife the best things. But this time… I felt so sorry for them.
I didn’t tell my husband or talk to anyone about it. I quietly returned to my mother-in-law’s rented room, putting a small finger-sized camera in the corner, hidden in an old wall clock. I gave them a pre-connected spare phone, to ensure their safety.
I didn’t expect that that night, I would see a scene that would make my soul tremble…
At around one o’clock in the night, when I was drowsy, my phone was vibrating continuously, which was a sign of some movement. I opened it and saw that the door of my mother-in-law’s room was slightly open from outside. A dark-skinned man wearing a hat came in. My mother-in-law was fast asleep, absolutely oblivious.
The man groped around, opened the drawer under the bed, then picked up an envelope, took out money to count. Again… He bent down and kissed my mother-in-law’s forehead – a very familiar gesture. I zoomed in on the picture and when I realised it was Rajesh, I was stunned.
I bit my lip, holding back tears. It turned out that it was not enough to repay him by selling the house and land. Now he did not even give up his modest pension.
The next morning, I quietly sent the video to the family group. Not a word. Not even five minutes had passed when the whole family erupted.
Rajesh was called by his own mother and slapped him in the face in front of all the relatives:
“I lost everything because of you, now you have come to snatch every penny from me, Rajesh?”
Soon after, the Sharma family convened an emergency meeting, and announced that all succession rights would be terminated and that Rajesh would be removed from the list of holidays and death anniversaries.
As far as I’m concerned… I stood silently behind me, saying nothing.
That night, my mother-in-law called me, her hands trembling and she handed me the old savings book:
“I apologize for being biased for so many years. Now I know which one is true. ”
I smiled lightly, didn’t take the book and just said:
“I don’t need a book, Mom. I just want your sleep. ”
That night, my mother-in-law slept well for the first time in many years.
As far as I’m concerned – for the first time I felt like a daughter-in-law… Truly.
