The daughter-in-law took care of her mother-in-law for 8 years, but no one cared about her daughters once. When she passed away, all the property and land were bequeathed to her daughters, but the daughter-in-law had nothing.
I got married at the age of 25, my husband was the youngest son. The only person in the family was an old lady. After the wedding, she gradually became weaker, no one could take care of her, I was the only one by her side.
For 8 years, from spoon-feeding her porridge to changing her diapers in the middle of the night. I thought it was because of filial piety, because of responsibility – but in my heart I also secretly believed that she would love me, at least leave something for my husband and I when she was a hundred years old.
Then she died.
At the funeral, the two eldest daughters, who had not been seen for a long time, suddenly appeared, sobbing, one holding a portrait, the other sitting and telling stories about their mother as if she had never left . I was silent.
On the day the will was read, the whole family filled the house. The lawyer spoke:
“The old lady left all her land, house, and savings book — divided equally between her two biological daughters. The youngest daughter-in-law’s name was not included in any of the accounts.”
I stiffened.
Not because of regret, but because… choking .
For 8 years, I was the only one by her side, and the two daughters, some years, didn’t even come back once. Why did she…?
My husband was also silent. He did not blame me, just looked at me, gently held my hand:
“Come on, you live for yourself. Don’t take it to heart.”
Then on the 49th , when I was making her bed and lifting the worn-out mat, I suddenly noticed something bulging underneath. Curiously, I pulled it out…
It was a carefully sealed envelope , with my name on it.
I opened it with trembling hands.
It was a savings book in my name — the amount was nearly 2 billion VND .
Attached was a piece of paper, with shaky, old handwriting:
“This is what I saved for my youngest daughter-in-law.
You are not related by blood, but you love me the most in the family.
The two of them are my children, but for years I have never asked if I am alive or dead.
Keep them and live in peace. Don’t blame me. I just want your name not to be dragged into the division.
I love you like my own daughter…”
I burst into tears.
Not because of the money.
But because all these days, I secretly blamed her… in my heart.
It turns out she wasn’t ungrateful. She
just loved me in a quiet, unobtrusive way.
Now I hold the savings book, and it feels heavier than anything I have ever held in my life.
Mom…
I was wrong.
