Coming home 5 hours late, mother-in-law yelled: “12 people are waiting for you to cook!” – I did something that shocked the whole family…
I have been a daughter-in-law for three years now, but I have never felt truly considered a member of the family. Despite my best efforts, I am always the one who “must be on time”, “must cook 7 dishes” and “must be considerate”. Being a daughter-in-law in a three-generation family, with 12 people always present at every meal, is indeed a big challenge.
That day, I asked for permission to go to work early to take care of some office work, but was kept back for an unexpected meeting. I tried to call my husband to let him know I would be home late, but all he said was: “Try to come home early, there is a death anniversary at home.”
I left the company at 6pm and got home at almost 7pm. As soon as I stepped through the gate, I heard my mother-in-law’s voice from the kitchen:
“You’re home at this hour? Do you think this house is a hotel? There are 12 people waiting for you to cook!”
I stood there, stunned. There was only one question in my mind: “Why do I have to take responsibility for such a large family?” Everyone sat around the dinner table, no one said anything, but their eyes looked at me as if I was the guilty one.
I didn’t reply. I just silently went straight to my room, changed clothes, and washed my face. My mother-in-law shouted from the kitchen:
“You still have to change clothes! If you don’t cook quickly, do you want the whole family to starve?”
I walked out, looked everyone straight in the eye, and said calmly:
“From today, I will no longer be responsible for cooking for the family.”
The whole family was stunned. My husband immediately stood up, frowning:
“What are you talking about? You are the daughter-in-law, if you don’t cook, who will?”
I pursed my lips, took a piece of paper from my pocket, and put it on the table.
– “Here are the details of the housework I have been doing for the past 3 years: from shopping, cooking, washing dishes, cleaning, doing laundry… All of it, no one in the house has ever shared. I did it all. Now, I quit.”
The mother-in-law angrily slammed her fist on the table:
“Do you want to make a mess of this house? You don’t care about anyone!”
I nodded, but my eyes remained calm:
“I have never looked down on anyone, it’s just that everyone is too used to me having to bear everything. Today, I just want to reclaim justice.”
I turned to my husband:
“You said you would protect me, but in the past 3 years, you have never stood by my side once. Being a daughter-in-law does not mean I have to become an unpaid maid.”
The mother-in-law was about to continue, but the father-in-law spoke up:
“Enough! Everyone here is an adult, everyone knows how to cook and clean. The daughter-in-law is right. Everyone should share some of the housework.”
The whole family was silent. My brother-in-law mumbled:
“Sister… I’m sorry. Actually, I also saw you struggling, but I didn’t know how to help…”
I turned around, walked into the kitchen, opened the refrigerator, and placed on the table the dishes that had been prepared since yesterday: marinated meat, washed vegetables, and half-cooked soup.
– “If everyone wants to eat, just turn on the stove and cook. I have prepared everything.”
Then I returned to my room. That night, I did not cook anything, nor did I hear anyone calling. My husband came into the room late, did not say a word, just sat quietly beside me.
The next morning, when I woke up, the kitchen was tidy. A simple breakfast of white rice porridge and boiled eggs was placed on the table. Next to it was a small piece of paper, in my mother-in-law’s handwriting:
“I never thought you would suffer so much. I will learn to change. Thank you.”
I held the paper, my heart choking. Sometimes, just by standing up, you not only change your position – but also change the thinking of those around you.
