The day Minh was appointed as deputy director, he returned home with a proud face. But that joy was not for Lan – the wife who had been with him through the difficult years. That night, when Lan had just finished serving dinner, Minh coldly threw the divorce papers on the table.

– You are not worthy of me anymore. I need a woman who can stand by my side at every party, every meeting. You are not that person.

Lan was stunned, her hands shaking so much that the rice bowl fell and broke. She couldn’t believe that the man who had sworn to live and die by her side could now be so cruel. Before she could calm down, she discovered that he had someone else – a young girl from a rich family, willing to go abroad with Minh.

He left Lan with a bleeding heart, leaving with a new man as if there had never been a marriage.

Dark days

Lan had fallen down before. She locked herself in her small room, living like a shadow. But when she looked in the mirror and saw a haggard woman, her eyes had lost all light, she suddenly realized.  If she fell down, no one would stand up to help her.

Lan started from zero. She applied for jobs, doing the smallest jobs, from answering the phone to drafting contracts. She was looked down upon, and her colleagues laughed at her for being a “left-over woman”. But Lan swallowed her tears, gritted her teeth, and worked hard, studying day and night.

No one expected that it was this perseverance that helped Lan quickly advance. She was smart, determined, and more importantly – never gave up. After a few years, Lan became the CEO, then opened her own company.

Step by step, her small company grew into an international corporation, signing a series of million-dollar contracts.  Lan went from being an outcast to becoming a famous President.

7 years later – the fateful meeting

One morning, Lan received a meeting schedule with an important partner. When she saw the name of the company representative, she paused for a moment:  Tran Minh.

The next day, when the conference room door opened, Minh walked in. He was still polished, but he no longer had the arrogant air of the past. Instead, his face bore the scars of years of failure.

Minh was stunned when he saw Lan sitting in the chair. He stuttered, his voice choked:

– I… I’m looking for the President. Why you?

The whole room fell silent. All the eyes of the international directors were on Lan. She raised her head and smiled confidently:

– Yes, I am the Chairman you are looking for.

Minh was stunned, his hands clenched until they trembled. He remembered the harsh words he had said:  “You are not worthy of me anymore!”  Now, he was the one who was not worthy to stand before her.

Late Offer

After the meeting, Minh tried to find Lan. He choked up:

– Lan… I was wrong. In the past years, I have not had a single happy day. She… the one I chose, left me when the company went bankrupt. I lost everything. But you… you have succeeded to a level I cannot believe. How about… we start over?

Lan looked straight into his eyes, memories flooded back: the hard days, the silent sacrifices, and the cruel betrayal. At that moment, she realized that there was only peace in her heart.

She shook her head slightly:

– Sorry, Minh. The woman who used to kneel for you is dead. The person standing before you today is President Lan, not the resigned wife of the past.

Minh turned pale and stepped back.

The unexpected ending

Just then, a foreign man walked over, kindly put his coat on Lan and said in a gentle voice:

– Honey, the car is ready. Let’s go, the son is waiting.

Minh froze. He saw the warm gaze Lan gave the other man – the gaze he once had but had lost with his own hands.

Lan turned to Minh gently, her voice calm:

– This is my husband, the one who has trusted and accompanied me all these years. Minh, I hope that in the future you will learn to appreciate what you have.

Having said that, she held her husband’s hand and walked down the large hallway, leaving Minh with a dull, bitter look in his eyes.

At that moment, he understood that  what he lost, he could never get back in this life.
