Liza Soberano Reveals Why She Broke Up With Enrique Gil
Everyone’s been talking about how Liza Soberano finally confirmed her breakup with Enrique Gil. TBH, it’s one of the things the Internet has been waiting for. At some point, their separation became an open secret. But, as we all know, a rumor remains a rumor until the involved parties confirm it.
Now, Liza’s ready to tell her side of the story. In an episode of Australian photographer Sarah Bahbah‘s YouTube series Can I Come In?, the actress revealed that she and Enrique had called it quits three years ago—but she’d been unhappy long before that. “A year before I actually broke up with him, there were already signs that were showing me that I was unhappy,” she divulged.
Nevertheless, she decided to stay in the relationship. “Because I was afraid of confrontation, I decided to just swallow it, or, like, sweep everything under the rug. I remember I did a mental check with myself, and I accepted that there were certain things about him that I wasn’t okay with, and that it’s just always going to be like that,” she added.
“And that’s not to say he is a bad person. He didn’t do anything bad. Nothing bad happened. Our breakup was really good, it was just that we weren’t a match anymore,” Liza clarified.
Liza and Enrique, or Quen as Liza fondly calls him, were together for eight years. It’s no secret that the two actors forged a strong bond as a love team. And after eight years together, naturally, you end up considering the possibility of marriage. Liza, herself, admitted to that. She said, “I was genuinely expecting us to get married, but then that didn’t happen.”
Despite everything, Liza noted that they ended their relationship still full of love for one another. “I would say it was such a beautiful breakup because it was still so, so full of love. I love him as a person,” she expressed.

Liza Soberano on not admitting their breakup to the public for three years
But while it’s been years since the two officially split, Liza and Enrique made it seem that they were still together. They even responded to relationship questions from time to time.
In the same interview, Liza revealed that it was Enrique who requested to keep their breakup unconfirmed. But aside from that, she also felt scared to admit it to the public, especially to their fans.
“I’ve been honestly itching to tell people this, because I haven’t been very truthful. Quen hasn’t been very truthful,” Liza remarked. “Originally, the reason why we haven’t said anything about it is because Enrique or Quen asked me not to say anything about it first.”
She added. “And I think—I don’t want to speak for him—but I think it was coming from a place of not wanting it to be real. And at the same time, you know, I agreed to that because I also didn’t want it to be real.”
One of the reasons why she agreed to that arrangement, she confessed, is that she was scared of the reaction to the news of their breakup. After all, Liza and Enrique, or LizQuen to their fans, were once one of the most sought-after love teams of this generation.
“And this is coming from the people-pleaser side of me because I was so afraid that if people found out we weren’t together anymore, my career would go bad or, you know, people just wouldn’t love me anymore. It was me again pretending or putting the things I need to do for myself off to make them happy or make them feel safe,” Liza stated.
But Liza had to overcome that fear if she wanted to pursue her career goals. At the moment, she’s exploring opportunities in Hollywood. She doesn’t just want to be an excellent actress, but also to own her Filipino heritage and go beyond stereotypes.
“After doing my press runs where I talked about being a Filipina actress, I constantly got offers for Filipino characters with very stereotypical arcs. I don’t want to be limited or categorized based on my race. I want to one day be in the same conversations as other well-known actresses who star in projects that are up for Emmy and Oscar nominations,” the strong-willed 26-year-old actress told Preview.ph.
Meanwhile, Enrique has been moving forward with his solo career as well. ICYMI, he was the lead star in the 2024 film I Am Not Big Bird.

Throughout their relationship, Liza saw Enrique not just as her partner in love but also in their career—someone who knows the ups and downs of her life, starting from when she was still building up her name.
And for that, Liza cherishes Enrique and the memories they created together. “He’s like, I think of him as like a childhood best friend.”
Although their breakup was a decision she made for herself, Liza also expressed how conflicted she was after arriving at that point. “I carry a lot of guilt for not being the one who held on because that’s what my fans wanted to do. But also, I needed to find myself and grow, too. And there were things that I knew that I shouldn’t tolerate for the people who look up to me.”
She continued, “I knew deep down in my core that something was wrong and that I would be doing a disservice not only to me but to him if I didn’t say anything or do anything about it, so I’m not there yet, but I hope to be.”
As of writing, Enrique hasn’t publicly reacted to Liza’s breakup confirmation or responded to Cosmo‘s request for a comment. The actress still affirmed that she hasn’t lost contact with her ex-boyfriend. “We still talk from time to time,” she said.
And in case you were unaware, Enrique was reportedly seen leaving an “I love you” comment in one of Liza’s TikTok videos one week before Liza confirming their breakup. However, as PEP.ph reported, Enrique’s comment is currently nowhere to be found and appears to have been deleted after Liza’s interview was published.
