It was raining that day, just like the mood of Ms. Huong – a woman who had just been kicked out of the house by her husband that she had spent her youth cultivating. The three-year-old child held his mother’s hand in a daze, not understanding why he had to go out in the middle of the cold rain.
Mr. Tuan – her husband – stood on the porch, his hands around the young girl’s waist, his eyes were cold, casual as if he was seeing off someone unrelated. Ms. Huong didn’t cry, just pursed her lips, squeezed her child’s hand and then led her away.
Suddenly, Mr. Tuan’s aunt, Tram, ran after her. She put a stack of money in Sister Huong’s hand, and sneered:
“Take it and rent an inn for a few days. It’s only three days. Come back in three days, you will see a surprise.”
Sister Huong looked at her, without saying a word. She herself does not need money from a third person, but she has no money left in her hand, she is forced to accept it – for the sake of her child.
Three days passed slowly. Ms. Huong and her child temporarily stayed at an old friend’s house. She couldn’t sleep for long nights, not because she regretted that marriage, but because her heart ached when she thought that her child would grow up in a lack of fatherly love, because she had chosen the wrong person.
On the morning of the fourth day, she returned to her old house. Not because of the hope of forgiveness or the desire to heal, but because Tram’s strange words kept haunting her: “You will see the unexpected…”
The door opened. The scene inside stunned her.
The house is sprawling. Furniture was thrown around, tables and chairs were sloppy, and broken glasses were all over the floor. In the corner, Mr. Tuan was sitting flat, his hands covering his head, his nose was listless, and his hair was messy. I didn’t see Tram.
Ms. Huong just stood there, not saying anything. It wasn’t until he looked up at her that his eyes were filled with regret and fatigue.
“She left me…” – Mr. Tuan said little. ” Carrying money, phones, and cars. All… is deceiving you. This house is also about to be squeezed by the bank.”
Ms. Huong was silent, then slowly walked in, holding the sleeping child on her shoulders. Putting the baby down on the chair, she poured herself a glass of water, as if she had never been kicked out of her own house on nights.
Mr. Tuan continued to speak, as if he could no longer hold anything in his heart:
“She said she wanted to try to see if you really dared to leave your wife and children. I didn’t expect him to do it. In the past three days, he has understood… Everything I have is thanks to you.”
She looked at him – the man who used to be a support, used to be love, but then it was he who ruthlessly pushed her mother and daughter into the street. Her eyes were no longer reproachful, nor angry. Only the equanimity of one person has reached the bottom of the pain.
“Three days… that he thought he had been in for a lifetime. Sister, give me a chance… You’re wrong.” – he stammered, his voice choking.
Ms. Huong did not answer immediately. She turned to look at her son, who was sleeping peacefully in his mother’s arms. Then she said, gently but decisively:
“I don’t need to apologize to you. Apologize to your child – for your selfishness and anger. I thought I could find happiness by abandoning the things that were familiar, but I forgot that sometimes the most precious thing is right in front of my eyes.”
Mr. Tuan lowered his head, tears running down his cheeks.
Ms. Huong got up, picked up her child, and was about to leave. But when she came to the door, she turned around and said:
“I don’t hate you. But I can’t go back either. I will live a new life – for you, and for yourself. As for you, if you have a little conscience, know how to hold on to what is left.”
She walked, this time taking the initiative. No more pain, no more being chased, but choosing a way out for yourself.
The story was not long, but it made the people in the neighborhood talk about it forever. People feel sorry for a man who lost his kind wife, pity for a woman who dares to let go when there is no hope.
As for Tram – that “kind” girl – no one knows her whereabouts. Someone said she just wanted to teach Mr. Tuan a lesson. Some people say it’s just a scam. But for Ms. Huong, she is the mirror that best reflects the human heart – when greed interferes with the happiness of others, they themselves will have to bear the consequences.
Lesson learned:
Never test the patience and love of someone who has sacrificed for you. For when they leave, it is not because they are weak, but because they are so strong that they no longer need anyone by their side.
