My father is 65 years old this year. For decades, he was cuffed to feed 5 mouths, never complaining a word. In my eyes, he is a “hero of the family”. But then, as the economy improved, I saw that he began to change: he was dressed better, his phone was password-locked, and every night he made an excuse to “play chess with friends.”

I had a hunch that something was wrong, I silently watched. And then, one night, I was stunned to see him walk straight into a roadside motel. In my heart, anger and shame flared up for my mother. The father I had respected for so many years, now secretly betrayed my mother like this?

I was determined to stalk to the end. After waiting for nearly an hour, when I saw him open the door of the room and walk out with a woman, I rushed over.

“Dad…!!” – I grunted, my trembling hands pointing straight at them.

The woman heard the sound and was startled to turn around. And that moment made me stand like petrified:
There was no stranger in front of me… it was my mother.

My mother blushed, hurriedly avoiding my gaze, and my father was stunned and couldn’t react. I choked my throat, I couldn’t understand what was going on. Why mother? The two of you… Dating here?

Seeing that I was bewildered, my father pulled me to a hidden corner, sighed, and then slowly said a secret that I had never imagined:

“Your mother… Actually, not my father’s legal wife. For more than 40 years, we have only lived together as husband and wife without papers. Dad had an official wife before… And now she came back to claim her rights. In order to protect your mother and children, I was forced to rent a temporary accommodation, sneaky like a thief…”

I was stunned. All these years – my parents’ “marriage” is just a half-truth? Before I had time to calm down, my mother burst into tears, confessing one more terrifying thing:

“Your father’s eldest wife… is the biological mother of my sister-in-law. And for so many years, she has never let go, always trying to throw a net to bind this whole family…”

The heavens and the earth were spinning before my eyes. All the contradictions, the rifts in the family, turned out to come from this unjust relationship. My father did not betray my mother – on the contrary, he lived his whole life in torment, both atonement for the past and trying to hide the bitter truth to protect us.

But that secret, in the end, was still exposed by me right in that dark motel room.
