The wife met with an accident, the husband sent her back to her hometown to take care of her grandparents, came to pick her up after four months and unexpectedly suffered bitterness…
In Maynila, in a cramped rented room in Uttam Nagar, Arjun and Meera have been married for five years. Meera is gentle and hardworking, and saves every penny in hopes of buying a small apartment by the end of the year. Arjun is different: he is always complaining about pressure, comparing money to his wife, and thinking to himself that he deserves a “better” man.
One afternoon, Meera met with a road accident while returning home from work. The collision caused serious injuries to his leg and he had to be hospitalized. The doctor said it would take him at least half a year to recover. Hearing this, Arjun’s eyebrows were raised and he called his friend the same night:
“He’s paralyzed like this, living in the city is just a waste of money.” Take him back to his hometown and have his grandparents take care of him. We are young now, we have to think about the future. ”
Meera was lying in the hospital room, listening to every word vaguely, her heart pressing as if it were being pressed.
The next day, Arjun pretended to be thoughtful: “I’m busy with work, I can’t be there to take care of you.” Let me take you to my maternal home in Barabanki, where your grandmother will take care of you. I’ll send you money every month.
Mira bit her lip and nodded, understanding that he wanted to push her away long ago.
Back home, Meera was taken care of by her grandparents at every meal. Luckily, Ishaan – the son of a distant relative who had recently completed his physiotherapy course – agreed to visit Meera’s house every day to check on her. Ishaan patiently paraded her in the courtyard under the neem tree, told her funny stories to relieve her sadness, and carefully recorded her diet and exercise schedule.
Four months passed, Arjun just sent a little money, barely called. One day, he announced that he would be coming back to pick up his wife:
“It’s not good to stay in the countryside for too long. You should go back to Maynila.
His voice was hoarse, as if he wanted to quickly finish everything.
That morning, Arjun drove back to Barabanki. As soon as he stepped in through the gate, he was stunned to see the courtyard made of bricks. Mira was learning to walk, her hair was tied, her face was pink; Ishaan was standing nearby, holding her waist with one hand and holding her hand with the other. They both smiled naturally. That image pierced Arjuna’s eyes like a knife. His eyes deepened—not because of his wife’s concern—but because of uneasiness: “She’s so happy here… Maybe he doesn’t need me anymore. ”
At lunchtime, his grandparents kept praising Ishaan’s kindness and patience. Arjun tried to smile, but he had a plan in mind: when he returned to Delhi, he would try for a divorce to “free” himself.
Three months later, Arjun returned with a divorce petition, thinking that Meera would be shocked and giggling. But when he entered the courtyard, he was stunned: Meera was walking almost normally, standing next to Ishaan, with an invitation card in her hand.
Meera smiled calmly and looked at Arjun:
“Thank you… For abandoning me at the time when I was weakest. Otherwise, I don’t find anyone who truly loves me.
She gently handed over the card: It was an invitation to Meera and Ishaan’s engagement, which was due to take place after the divorce proceedings were completed.
The grandparents walked out, their voices cold:
“We know everything you said and did. You’ve come today, consider it your last time. ”
Arjuna stood there, his face turning pale. He turned and walked away. Behind him, sweet laughter echoed in the courtyard of the Indian village—sounds he would never hear again.
