In Australia, Sara Duterte Rallies Behind Her Father as ICC Case Unfolds

SARA DUTERTE – Vice President Sara Duterte traveled to Australia to participate in a rally demanding the release of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Sara Duterte is currently in Australia for another “personal trip,” according to the Office of the Vice President (OVP), which confirmed her travel on Friday.

“Vice President Sara Duterte is currently on a personal trip to Australia,” the OVP stated in a message to reporters via Viber.

The office did not provide any further details about her itinerary, including her departure date or expected return to the Philippines. What was disclosed, however, is that Duterte is expected to attend a rally in Melbourne on June 22, 2025. The event aims to call for the release of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is presently detained by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands. The former president is facing charges related to crimes against humanity.

This is not the first time the vice president has traveled abroad for personal reasons. Prior to this, she was in Malaysia where she met with overseas Filipino workers. That trip, too, was labeled by her office as a “personal trip.”

Just weeks earlier, Duterte flew to the Netherlands to celebrate her birthday. During that visit, she also led a protest demanding her father’s release from ICC custody. Her string of foreign visits underscores her continuing support for the former president amid mounting legal challenges.

These travels come at a time when Vice President Duterte is facing serious legal battles of her own. She is currently set to undergo an impeachment trial in the Senate. The charges against her include betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes. The House of Representatives voted to impeach her on February 5, initiating the legal process now underway.

Despite the looming trial, Duterte’s commitment to her father’s cause remains strong, as evidenced by her active participation in international rallies and continued personal visits to places connected to his case.
