Awakened by a strange noise, I got up to check and saw the maid running out of the room in a disheveled state.
That strange noise, a very soft “clatter” but sharp enough to penetrate the quiet curtain of the night, woke An from her restless sleep. She was startled, her eyes still heavy with fatigue trying to figure out in the darkness. Her heart was pounding, a feeling of unease crept throughout her body. She gently sat up, trying not to make any noise, listening carefully. The noise seemed to come from her study, the room right next to her bedroom, where she kept important documents and a few precious souvenirs.
An carefully got out of bed, her bare feet touching the cold wooden floor. She moved step by step as softly as a ghost, holding her breath as she approached the door. The closer she got, the more clearly she could hear the whispering sounds, mixed with the rapid breathing. A flash of worry flashed through her mind, but she tried to push it aside. She knew clearly that there were no strangers in this house, only her and Mai, the maid who had lived with her for many years. However, her intuition told her that something was wrong.
As An opened the bedroom door, a dim light from the hallway streamed in. A shadowy figure appeared in the darkness, making her jump back in surprise. Mai, her maid, was rushing out of the study. She was wearing a crumpled nightgown, her hair was disheveled, and her eyes were red and panicked as she looked at An. An was stunned. The air was thick with awkwardness, and a bitter suspicion began to grow in her heart.
Mai bowed her head, not daring to meet An’s scrutinizing gaze. She hurriedly stammered a few incoherent words and then rushed down the stairs, like a cornered animal. An stood there, feeling as if a heavy rock was pressing down on her chest. Mai, the person she had always trusted and considered a family member, was acting so strangely. What had happened in her office? Why was Mai in such a hurry and panic?
An took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. She walked into the office and turned on the light. The cold white light illuminated the room, exposing everything. She glanced around, checking every corner. Everything seemed intact. Books were still neatly placed on the shelves, the drawers of the filing cabinets were still closed. There was no sign of disturbance, nor was anything missing. But what about that noise just now? And Mai’s panicked expression? She felt a great conflict in her heart, between her reason wanting to believe and her emotions that were being violently shaken.
She walked over to the desk, her hands running lightly over the cool wood. Just then, her eyes fell on a small, intricately carved wooden box that had been her grandmother’s jewelry box. It had long been empty and she had used it to hold small paper clips. The box now lay a little off-center, the lid ajar. An uneasy feeling rose in her. Had Mai touched it? Or was she searching for something inside?
The next morning, the atmosphere in the house became heavier than ever. Mai still maintained an evasive attitude, she worked mechanically, her thin shoulders hunched, her eyes always looking down. An tried to start a conversation, but each of her questions was answered curtly or changed to something else. Mai’s silence made An’s suspicions grow. She began to recall Mai’s recent behavior: visibly thinner, dark circles under her eyes, and often looking into the distance as if she was thinking.
An decided to observe Mai secretly. She noticed that Mai often went to the balcony to make phone calls in the evening, her voice whispering, full of worry. Sometimes, she heard Mai mention words like “money”, “hospital”, “little girl”. An’s heart tightened. She knew Mai had a little daughter in the countryside who was being taken care of by her grandparents. Could it be that the little girl was sick? But why didn’t Mai tell her? Why did she have to be so secretive?
One afternoon, An saw Mai sneaking out with an old cloth bag. Her instinct told her to follow. She decided not to make a big deal out of it, just wanted to find out what was going on. An kept her distance, carefully following Mai through the crowded streets, and stopped in front of an old pawn shop, hidden in a small alley. Mai entered timidly, and only a few minutes later, she walked out with a disappointed look on her face and a crumpled bill in her hand.
An felt her heart squeeze. Mai was pawning something. Was she in such a difficult situation that she had to do this? An waited until Mai was out of sight before entering the pawn shop. She asked the owner about the item Mai had just brought. The owner sighed and said that Mai had just brought an old jade bracelet, but it was badly chipped and not worth much. That bracelet, An realized, was the keepsake she had given Mai on her birthday last year, a small gift to thank her for her dedication.
An stood there, feeling both hurt and ashamed. She had suspected Mai, while Mai was facing a silent war. She returned home, her heart heavy. An decided to talk frankly with Mai, she could not let this silence continue. That night, after dinner, An called Mai into the living room. Mai still bowed her head, her trembling hands clutching the hem of her shirt. An looked at Mai, her eyes now no longer filled with doubt, but only with pity.
“Mai, is there something you need to tell me?” An asked softly, her voice warmer than she thought. Mai remained silent, tears starting to roll down her cheeks. She choked up, unable to speak. “Mai, I saw you pawning something. I also know your daughter is not well.” An continued, her voice full of sympathy. Mai raised her head, her eyes filled with tears as she looked at An, seemingly unable to believe what she had just heard. Her tears fell like rain, tears filled with so much pain.
Mai bật khóc nức nở, tiếng khóc nghẹn ngào phá vỡ sự im lặng trong phòng. Cô ấy quỳ sụp xuống, cúi đầu tạ tội. “Chị An… em xin lỗi… em xin lỗi chị nhiều lắm…”
An tiến đến, đỡ Mai dậy, ôm lấy cô ấy.
An không chỉ hỗ trợ chi phí mà còn động viên, an ủi Mai từng chút một.
Linh’s surgery was a success. Mai called An as soon as she woke up, her voice trembling with happiness. An felt extremely relieved, as if a huge rock had just been lifted from her heart. She understood that helping Mai was not just charity, but a giving to receive, to receive trust, connection and a valuable lesson in compassion. She told herself, if she had not woken up that night, had not witnessed Mai running out of the room, had not had the misunderstanding and then the truth revealed, perhaps she would never have known the burden Mai was carrying on her shoulders.
When Linh was discharged from the hospital and gradually recovered, Mai returned to work with a completely different spirit. She no longer had an evasive or worried attitude. Her lips were always smiling, her eyes were bright, and her steps were quicker than ever. Mai worked harder and more devotedly, as if she wanted to make up for what An had done for her and her daughter. Not only did she do her job well, but she also proactively helped An in many other things, becoming a strong right-hand man and a true confidant.
Every time she saw Mai smile, saw the peace in her eyes, An felt strangely warm inside. She realized that sometimes, seemingly disastrous incidents were actually the beginning of a better, deeper relationship. The wooden box incident, the strange noise at night, and even the initial misunderstandings, were all part of the journey that helped An and Mai understand each other better, trust each other more.
One evening, while An was reading in the living room, Mai brought out a cup of hot ginger tea. She put the cup down on the table and said softly, “Sister An, thank you so much. Thank you for saving my daughter, for believing in me and helping me when I was in the most difficult situation. I will never forget your kindness.” An looked at Mai and smiled. “Mai, don’t say that. We are family. Besides, you taught me a great lesson about love and sacrifice. I should be thanking you too.”
Both smiled, their eyes met with understanding and connection. The house was now not just a shelter, but also a true home, where human love was nurtured from the fragments of misunderstanding and sincere sharing. Mai’s laughter, her light footsteps, and her warm presence in the house, all brought An a sense of peace and happiness that she had never had before. Their relationship had gone beyond the boundary of master and servant, becoming a sincere friendship, an unbreakable bond, woven from valuable experiences and lessons.
