On the Honeymoon Day, My Father-in-Law Came and Handed Me ₱50,000—And Said: “If You Want to Live, Leave Now…”

Wedding night. The lights in the room had just gone out, and the laughter of the guests still lingered outside the courtyard of the big house. Patricia sat on the bed, still wearing her white gown, waiting for her new husband, Daniel.

Suddenly the door opened.

But Daniel wasn’t the one who entered.

This was Mang Ernesto—Daniel’s quiet and serious father. From the engagement to the wedding, he rarely spoke. There was no emotion on his face now. He approached the table, placed an envelope down, and his cold voice broke the silence:

“There’s ₱50,000 in there. If you want to live, leave right now.”

Patricia’s eyes widened. Her heart stopped beating for a few seconds. She couldn’t believe it. Her mind asked: Why? What’s happening?

Before the Wedding

Patricia is from Batangas province. The daughter of two retired teachers. After completing her accountancy course at UP Diliman, she settled in Quezon City to work for a logistics company. It was here that she met Daniel—a kind, intelligent, and seemingly ideal man. A year after they started dating, Daniel proposed to her at an intimate dinner. She accepted.

Daniel is the only son of the owner of a famous chain of cafes throughout Luzon. Their wedding was held at their mansion in Tagaytay, very large and full of famous personalities. Patricia felt a little isolated among the many guests, but Daniel held her hand tightly as he whispered, “I will take care of you.”

But after the wedding, Patricia gradually noticed the cold behavior of her father-in-law, Mang Ernesto. Daniel’s mother was gone—she was dead, according to Daniel. But Mang Ernesto—it seemed like he was always hiding something. He was silent, not looking Patricia in the eye.

Honeymoon Night

After the celebration, Patricia tidied up her husband’s room. But instead of Daniel, Mang Ernesto arrived first. He was holding an envelope.

“This is not a bonus. This is compensation for your departure. It’s also the right time for this evening.”

“What? I don’t understand…”

“If you want to stay alive, leave. Don’t ask anymore questions.”

Patricia sat up in bed, her hands shaking. All sorts of questions entered her mind at once: Was I just being used? Was there some evil plan?

But his heart grew even heavier when Mang Ernesto spoke again:

“Daniel… has a secret. Something that if you find out, you might never be able to look at his face again.”

Patricia shook her head.

“Whatever it is, I want to know. I won’t give up.”

Mang Ernesto was silent until he brought out an old photo.

In the picture, Daniel is the one smiling. But what’s even more terrifying is the woman next to him: she looks almost exactly like Patricia. The woman is wearing a wedding dress. Daniel is holding her hand.

“She is Rowena—Daniel’s first wife. She is dead. It’s been two years.”

Patricia’s world stopped.

“Daniel can’t accept the loss of Rowena. He’s changed. It’s like he’s not the same anymore. Obsessed. And every time he sees a woman who looks like Rowena… he follows her.”

“And you, Patricia… you are the most similar. That’s why he chose you.”

Mang Ernesto’s grip on the chair tightened.

“Once, he almost hurt a woman just because she smiled the wrong way—not the same as Rowena. I don’t want that to happen again.”

The door opened. It was Daniel.

In his hand, he carried a small box. His smile was gentle, but Patricia could feel the weight behind it.

“Sorry, Papa called me to the kitchen earlier. I just got back.”

Patricia was silent, trying to suppress her trembling.

Daniel opened the box—an ivory comb, an old perfume, and a small diary.

“Rowena used this,” Daniel whispered. “I want you to wear it, use it. Just like before.”

“I am Patricia. I am not Rowena.”

Daniel looked, his eyes glaring:

“You are not Patricia. You are Rowena. And you will return to our old life.”

From Fear to Fight

When Daniel approached, holding the diary, Patricia tried to stand up. But Daniel was quick—he grabbed her arm, too tightly.

“Be quiet. If you don’t obey, you will disappear just like before.”

“Daniel… it’s not your fault. But you need to get treatment,” Patricia cried. “This is not love. This is an illness.”

Daniel almost went crazy after hearing this.

“YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND ME! HE’S THE ONE WHO’S GUILTY! HE’S THE ONE WHO LEFT!”

Rescue

Suddenly there was a loud knock on the door.

“Patricia! Son! Are you there?” – Mang Ernesto.

“Help me! He’s here!” – Patricia shouted.

Mang Ernesto broke down the door, holding a cane. Daniel, very angry:

“Even you, Papa? Even you, will you turn your back on Rowena?”

“This is not Rowena. And it’s time to end all the pain.”

They fought. In the midst of the chaos, Patricia called the police. Shortly after, Daniel was arrested and subjected to a psychiatric evaluation.

Three Weeks Later

In a café in Quezon City, Patricia is sitting next to Mang Ernesto.

He handed over a letter.

“It’s from Daniel. He said he wanted to apologize.”

Inside the envelope, there was only one thing written:

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you a ghost of my past. I hope you live as you are. Not as a shadow of someone else.”

Patricia looked up at the sky. The sunlight hit her face again.

This is the beginning of a new life. Finally, I am Patricia again. Not Rowena. Not a ghost. M
