Feeling sorry for the old lady in the sun, the driver gave her a ride, but 10 minutes later, something terrible happened to the driver…

On a summer afternoon, the asphalt road seemed to melt under the scorching sun. Minh, a truck driver transporting goods from Hanoi to his hometown, turned on the air conditioner at full blast but still felt hot. On the highway, the traffic was thinning out, leaving only the steady sound of engines and the wind whistling through the windows.

Suddenly, far away on the side of the road, Minh saw an old woman about 70 years old, with a hunched back, wearing a torn hat, carrying a heavy cloth bag. Her steps were slow, as if she was tired.

Minh slowed down and pulled over:
– Old man, it’s so hot, why are you walking alone? Get in my car and I’ll take you a bit to cool off.

The old lady hesitated a bit then nodded, her eyes shining with gratitude. Minh got down to help her climb into the cabin. The cool air conditioning made her breathe a sigh of relief.

The car started moving, the old lady told me that she had just gotten off the bus and was abandoned nearly 5 kilometers from home. Not wanting to bother anyone, she decided to walk home. Minh smiled as he listened, feeling relieved for having done a good deed.

Less than 10 minutes later, when the car passed a deserted stretch of road, the old lady frowned, sniffed lightly and said:
– Sir, I smell a burning smell… like the smell of burning electrical wire or rubber or something.

Minh was startled. His nose was used to the smell of engine oil, but there was a strange burning smell. He quickly slowed down, pulled the car over, opened the door and got out to check.

As soon as he stepped out, Minh saw thin smoke coming from the left rear tire well. Leaning closer, he discovered that the tire was blistering abnormally, the rubber lining was hot – just a few more kilometers at high speed and it could explode. Not to mention, a nearby wire had rubbed against the frame, the coating was scorched, just waiting to touch the metal and create a spark.

If the old lady hadn’t reminded him, Minh would have continued to drive through the steep and sharp bends ahead. If the tire had exploded or an electrical short had touched the engine oil, the consequences would have been dire.

He sighed, his heart still beating fast:
– Grandpa… luckily you smelled it. Otherwise… I don’t know what would have happened.

The old lady smiled kindly:
– I’m old, my nose is very sensitive, I can recognize strange smells right away.

Luckily, there was a small repair shop nearby. Minh called them to bring the tools. While waiting, the old lady took a bottle of water from her bag and gave it to him:
– Drink it, it’s so hot that you’ll get tired easily.

Minh took it, feeling both gratitude and respect. He thought he was simply helping the old lady get a ride, but she ended up saving his life.

After nearly an hour, the tire was patched, the wires replaced, and the system checked. Minh drove the old lady to the end of the alley. Before getting out of the car, she slipped him a few custard apples in a cloth bag:
– Homegrown, not much, but it’s heartfelt. Please accept it to make me happy.

Minh initially refused, but the old lady insisted. He accepted, smiling and feeling a warmth spread throughout his body.

That afternoon, as the car sped on the road again, Minh kept thinking about what his grandmother said:
– Sometimes, helping others is also helping yourself.

And he knew that from now on, whenever he saw someone needing help on the street, he would never hesitate.
